Zoe & Wullie's wedding in SWD

We still get a thrill every time we see our photos in print. So it was an exciting moment this morning when a loud thud indicated the arrival of the latest issue of the Scottish Wedding Directory.

This bumper issue celebrates the magazine's 15th anniversary, and the SWD team have really excelled themselves. If you're planning your wedding it's a great starting point for ideas, inspiration and sound advice.

This issue also comes with an extra 'venues' magazine. It features the wedding of Zoe & Wullie Campbell, which we photographed at Fintry Kirk & Monachyle Mhor in May 2009. It was a beautiful day (except for the weather - which was more atmospheric!), and seeing it in the magazine brought back lots of lovely memories!

We met up with Zoe & Wullie again in November for a wonderful wintry Trash the Dress shoot. Check out the photos here to see why a pair of waders was on Jay's Christmas list!

A little wedding inspiration

January is always a really busy time when it comes to wedding enquiries, and this year is proving no different.

We're also busy compiling our lists of favourite images from our 2009 weddings, so look out for those blog posts coming soon. It's proving very hard to narrow the selection down, but we're getting there!

In the meantime, for those of you who are newly-engaged and looking for some inspiration, I thought I'd share three of my favourite wedding blogs with you:

It's a new dawn...

Happy New Year! We hope you partied hard and that those of you who are busy planning your weddings (or are just married) managed to get some time out to relax too.

And congratulations to everyone who got engaged over the holidays. We've been hearing of some very romantic proposals taking place in the snow!

After a lovely break catching up with friends and family, it's business as usual here again - at least for one half of Elemental (Jay spent Christmas with his family in Ontario, Canada and is snowboarding there right now). It's hard being apart at this time of year, but we're very lucky to get to work together all year round, doing something which we both feel so passionate about.

We're really excited about 2010! We've got lots of incredible weddings coming up, along with some exciting new projects that we look forward to sharing with you over the coming weeks and months.

On a personal level, we will celebrate our third wedding anniversary in May, one of us will turn 30 in September (I won't say who) and Jay is to be best man at his best friend's wedding in Canada in December. So if he seems to be taking even more interest in the best man's speech than usual, you'll know why!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Another amazing year is coming to an end and we're really looking forward to spending Christmas with our family and friends (not to mention over-indulging in Guitar Hero).

We've loved working with you all over the last twelve months and can't wait to share our latest projects with you in the New Year!

We'll be officially re-opening on January 4th but, you know us, we'll be dipping into our inbox before then, so feel free to get in touch.

Louise & Andrew - Cramond Kirk & Harburn House - Edinburgh wedding photography

We've had an amazing year, and Saturday's wedding - our last of 2009 - meant it ended on a total high!

It was a very foggy and frosty morning, and Harburn was looking breathtaking.

Over at Haymains, Andrew's brother and best man, Keith was giving his speech a final run through.

And a little something to keep the chill out.

Meanwhile, Team Louise was looking very glam over at the main house - even in PJs!

Hello beautiful dress & shoes!

Louise wore this stunning tiara during the day, and then a gorgeous Jenny Packham headpiece (as seen on Cheryl Cole) for night.

The bouquets were so pretty...

Flower girl Caitlin was a little bit in awe of the stunning bride...

Until Louise cracked a joke...

The ceremony took place at Cramond Kirk, where Andrew's parents were married.

Then it was back to Harburn House, where a very warm welcome (including Bloody Marys and a candy bar) was waiting.

Then came our absolute favourite bit - our photo session with Louise & Andrew.

The marquee looked wonderful.

And every detail of the day was just perfect.

A photo from our pre-wedding shoot was turned into a signature board for the guests to leave messages on.

Andrew delivered a cracking speech, despite being heckled by his own wife. ;-)

We heart Louise & Andrew's first dance.

The James Honey Band were fantastic, and the dancefloor was packed all night.

Fireworks were the perfect end to an incredible day.

Jude & Matt - Mayfield Salisbury Parish Church & The Signet Library - Edinburgh wedding photography

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

We're really getting into the festive spirit thanks to Jude & Matt's stunning winter wedding.

Our day began at Jude's family home, where the champers was flowing and the girls were feeling very relaxed and happy after chilling at The Scotsman Spa the day before. We took the opportunity to get some lovely detail shots, while having a good chat too.

Jude's dress was elegant and timeless - and she looked absolutely breathtaking.

Over at the church, Matt was looking very suave. And apart from an incident with missing (and then multiplying!) ties, all was running smoothly.

We love the moment when the groom sees his bride for the first time...

How gorgeous are these girls? The bridesmaids looked awesome in their midnight blue gowns, each with their own distinctive style.

Then it was on to The Signet Library, where we managed to steal Jude & Matt away for some photos...

We had some stiff competition, but at least we had the height advantage.

The reception venue looked incredible.

We always love working alongside Planet Flowers, and they really excelled themselves on Saturday.

The guests were given a beautiful bauble as a wedding favour.

After a delicious meal, it was time for the speeches to begin, and they all were fantastic.

And soon it was time for Jude & Matt to hit the dancefloor as husband and wife.

Zoe's Trash the Dress shoot (feat. Wullie)

Zoe was the lucky winner of our Trash the Dress competition and she opted to brave the November weather for this fun shoot.

She's no stranger to facing the elements in order to get great shots. We photographed Zoe & Wullie's wedding at Fintry Kirk & Monachyle Mhor back in May, and 'sideways rain' was the best way to describe the weather that day!

We got some gorgeous, atmospheric photos on their wedding day, but thought it would be great to head back to this stunning area on a blue sky day. Which meant, of course, that it was freezing!

Here are a few of our favourites from the shoot...

Behind the scenes. Zoe had a pair of awesome silver Hunter wellies. Jay didn't...

We ended the shoot with fish & chips and a cup of tea at MHORfish in Callander - just what we all needed to warm up!

We'd like to say a huge thanks to Zoe & Wullie for being such stars. We hope you'll agree it was worth it!

Thanks also to Zoe's mum, Catherine, who was a fabulous assistant during the shoot and who was incredibly supportive of the trashing concept - so much so in fact that she entered Zoe in our competition!

Jenni & Neil - Fettes College - Edinburgh wedding photography

Remember Jenni & Neil? After our fantastic pre-shoot with these guys back in July, we'd been so looking forward to photographing their wedding.

We knew Jenni would make a stunning bride, and we were bang on the money! She and her bridesmaids got ready at her family home in East Lothian, and there was lots of laughter and a few (happy!) tears.

Meanwhile, Neil & the boys got ready at Channings before heading over to Fettes...

and they were looking seriously good too...

We loved all the little personal touches, including the way Jenni & Neil incorporated photos from their pre-wedding shoot into the big day...

The team at Fettes were fantastic, and there was no way their bride was getting wet!

Jenni was piped down the aisle to Highland Cathedral. We love how proud and happy her dad looks in this photo.

And the look on their faces when they saw each other for the first time says it all.

The chapel at Fettes is stunning, and the service was both touching and humorous in equal measures.

Then it was time for some group photos, including this one of the gorgeous girls.

And then our favourite part of the day, the couple shots...

And have we mentioned how stunning Jenni looked?

Meanwhile, the guests were being entertained by close-up magician Kevin McMahon. We thought this was a really great idea.

Soon it was time for a wonderful meal.

Which was followed by fantastic speeches...

It's always great when the best man produces photographic evidence...

Jenni & Neil's first dance was simply incredible...we can't believe they only had four lessons (shows how bad at dancing we are)!

When Callanish hit the stage the guests were totally up for some dancing.

And we just couldn't resist a few last photos of the gorgeous bride and groom...

Rebecca, Barry & Nick - Edinburgh portrait photography

It was a bright, crisp day when we met up with this lovely family. Rebecca & Barry are from Canada and were keen to have some photos with their gorgeous two-year-old son, Nick during their time living in Edinburgh.

We had a great time exploring the Old Town's many nooks and crannies, and Nick was particularly delighted when we found ourselves next to a very big 'boat' (Dynamic Earth).

What a night!

We had a fantastic time at the VOWs (Voted Outstanding Wedding Supplier) Awards at the Glasgow Hilton last night and would like to say a huge congratulations to all of the nominees and winners.

It was an honour to be nominated for the Photography award alongside some of Scotland's top wedding photographers, and we're delighted for our good friends, Mark and Donna at Archibald Photography who were the very deserving winners this year.

The organisers pulled out all the stops to make it a night to remember, with fantastic performances from the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, SOS (Secret Opera Singers) & Aurora, and Craig Hill was an excellent compere and had us all in stitches throughout the night. Everyone we spoke to agreed that it was the best VOWs night yet.

Finally, and most importantly, we'd like to thank our brides and grooms for taking the time to vote for us. We really, really appreciate it and count ourselves very lucky to do a job we love and work with so many amazing people. You guys rock!

VOWS Awards 2009 - Scottish wedding photography

How exciting! Our tickets to the VOWS Awards arrived this morning - suddenly there is less than a week to go! While this is a little worrying on the new frock front for me, Jay is sorted with a gorgeous new suit.

The awards recognise consistently excellent levels of customer service in the Scottish wedding industry, and many of Scotland's top wedding suppliers will be there. It's rare that we're all able to get together, so this really is a very special occasion on many levels.

We're really looking forward to catching up with old friends, and seeing who lasts the longest on the whisky this time! After winning the photography category last year we (by which I mean me) may have over-indulged a little. Some of our best photographer friends are also up for the award this year, so it's going to be a great night!

Susan & Michael's wedding on Saturday was full of personal touches and was beautiful in every way, despite the rain!

Susan was looking absolutely gorgeous...

Hello yummy Choos...

And Michael and the boys were looking pretty damn fine too!

It was absolutely lashing down as Susan arrived at the church, but she was prepared for the Scottish weather. We loved her custom-made 1950s style dress. And look at that beautiful smile!

She and Michael couldn't stop smiling throughout the ceremony...

The rain didn't spoil the fun at all...

We had a quick photo shoot at the church before heading on to Edinburgh.

Over at Norton House, the New York-themed reception looked fabulous.

Michael had been more than a little nervous about his speech, but it was spot on.

After a wonderful meal we went exploring...

And Susan tried out her moves before hitting the dancefloor.

Susan is a huge Take That fan. She walked down the aisle to Stars and their first dance song was Greatest Day. Check out the gorgeous pink shoes she changed into too.

Linda & Richard - Forest Hills Hotel, Aberfoyle - Scottish wedding photography

Wow! How gorgeous was the weather on Saturday? We're convinced we even managed to pick up a bit of a tan at Linda & Richard's beautiful Trossachs wedding.

We arrived to find lots of activity (and laughter) in the girls' room...

Linda looked radiant, and couldn't stop smiling all morning. Her bridesmaids (sister Suzy, and friends Alison & Kim) looked gorgeous in dresses chosen to complement the autumn colours.

Meanwhile, Richard was looking fantastic in his morning suit. His best man, his brother Jon, entrusted us with the rings for a mossy ring photo...and yes, that is a giant chess board!

The beautiful ceremony...

We had a great laugh with the wedding party photos. Linda & Suzy grew up spending their holidays at Forest Hills, and this photo was taken where they used to go swimming in the outdoor pool and be attacked by midges each summer!

We took a walk with Linda and Richard, with lots of stops along the way for photos. How amazing is this tree? Love it!

The pier was a little wobbly, but Linda & Richard were totally up for getting down there!

They are also fans of our grungy backgrounds, and we managed to find the perfect spot amidst all the natural beauty...

Back at the hotel, the paparazzi were waiting...

And while the guests were enjoying a wonderful meal, we were in landscape heaven...

We loved this cake topping!

And this little guest was quite taken with her new teddy.

The speeches were very, very funny...

Then Linda & Richard surprised their guests with an amazing first dance to Elbow's One Day Like This, complete with lifts and even a death drop!

Louise & Ed - Bump shoot

Caroline & Andrew - St Mark's, Portobello & The Marine Hotel, North Berwick

We always knew that Caroline & Andrew's wedding was going to be great fun to photograph, and when the big day rolled around it was everything we'd expected, and more!

My day began in North Berwick, where Andrew was getting ready...here's the calm after the storm!

There was time for a wee dram before the boys hit the road in the VW Camper. Whisky was a recurring theme throughout the day (the tables were named after single malts) as both Andrew and Caroline are big fans of the 'water of life'.

Meanwhile, Jay was with the girls in Edinburgh where final preparations were taking place...

...and a good laugh was being had by all.

Caroline looked gorgeous...

And her flower girls were so excited to see her arrive at the church!

The ceremony was both very humorous and incredibly touching...

While Caroline & Andrew's lively recessional didn't go quite according to plan, no-one was seriously injured! And we loved this jig they did outside - what a great way to start married life.

Andrew managed to get hold of a confetti canon...

Then we popped back into the church for a few photos before heading on to North Berwick...

...where we got lucky with the weather and were able to make the most of the fantastic setting.

We all had a good laugh during the wedding party photos...

Meanwhile, a caricature artist was keeping the guests entertained...

And customised sticks of rock were going down a treat.

Soon it was time for the wedding breakfast. Best man John rounded off the excellent speeches.

And then Caroline & Andrew showed off their moves on the dancefloor.

Kilter soon had everyone else joining in...

And a surprise fireworks display was the perfect ending to a beautiful day.

Claudia & Steve - Fernie Castle - Scottish wedding photography

It's official ... autumn weddings rock. And when the wedding takes place at a Scottish castle (complete with treehouse!), and features a large dose of vintage chic, then that's all the better.

We absolutely loved Claudia's elegant look. She wore her mum's wedding dress, together with the skirt from her sister (and maid of honour) Mariana's wedding dress. She looked breathtaking...

Meanwhile, Steve was relaxing with a whisky...

The ceremony was beautiful...

Afterwards we headed outside for some group shots. Here's the awesome wedding party...

Then it was time to explore the grounds with Claudia & Steve. They were so much fun to photograph and made our job incredibly easy.

We love hearing how our couples first met and Claudia & Steve's story was particularly good...she is originally from Brazil and when she signed up for English lessons, Steve was the tutor.

We took a little road trip to the tree house where Claudia & Steve would be spending their first night as a married couple.

And then it was back to the castle...

It was great getting to know Claudia & Steve's family and friends, many of whom had travelled great distances to celebrate with them. And this little girl (and her mummy!) was just gorgeous...

Meanwhile, the party was warming up...

The cupcakes were winking at us...

And what we're sure was a night to remember was just beginning....

We had a great day in Stirlingshire with Romana and Allen, who were determined that the wild weather wouldn't dampen their celebrations.

Our day began in the Honeymoon Suite, where the girls were getting ready. Romana had brought her dress over from Munich and it was absolutely gorgeous...

Down at the church, the guests were in great spirits, despite the stormy weather! Friends and family had travelled from all over Europe to join Romana & Allen on their special day.

The rings!

The rain held off as Romana was piped into the church.

A beautiful service followed, in both English and German. A singer performed a wonderful rendition of "The first time ever I saw your face" and "Ave Maria".

And then it was time to brave the elements again!

A number of German customs were incorporated into the day - including the throwing of rice rather than confetti. The night before the wedding, an event called Polterabend took place. This German custom involves smashing plates and china as a sign of good luck for the married couple. The idea is that these plates will be broken, but the marriage never will.

We then popped back into the church for some photos (and to warm up!).

And then it was on to Culcreuch Castle. Romana & Allen chose a silver mini as their wedding car...

As soon as the weather calmed down we went outside for some photographs.

And got very lucky with a five minute window of beautiful light...

And then it was back in to the warmth of the reception venue.

Bridesmaid Judith looked great in her traditional Bavarian dress. She decided to give the pipes a go...

The younger guests were incredibly sweet...

And soon it was time for Romana's dad to open the speeches with a poem he had written for the happy couple.

How stoked are we! VOWS Awards 2009 shortlist announced

We found out tonight that we have been shortlisted for the VOWS Awards for the second year running. And, as you've no doubt guessed, we are totally chuffed!

The awards recognise consistently excellent levels of customer service in the Scottish wedding industry. And the best part is that they are voted for by brides and grooms.

We're really stoked to hear that all of our brides and grooms have been so happy with our service that they have put us forward for this award. And we'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who voted for us.

It was a massive surprise to be shortlisted and then to go on to win the Photography Award at the VOWS last year, and we'd convinced ourselves that - with so many fantastic wedding photographers here in Scotland - we'd be incredibly lucky to be shortlisted again this year. And that we are!

Thank you so much for all your support, kind words and faith in our eccentricity! We couldn't have got here without you.

We'd also like to congratulate our fellow photographers and other wedding suppliers who have been nominated this year. We're really looking forward to seeing you all in November. What a party it's going to be!

Niki & Mike - Glencorse Old Kirk & Glencorse House - Edinburgh Wedding Photography

Saturday's wedding was a truly international affair - Australian-born Niki met her soulmate Mike (who is from Ireland), while doing voluntary work in Africa, and they married here in Scotland.

With friends and family having travelled far and wide to spend the day with them, not to mention the large Irish contingent - it was always going to be a fantastic celebration!

Our day began with Niki and the girls, who were getting ready in the most beautiful apartment in Edinburgh's New Town...

Over at Glencorse, Mike and the boys were making their way to the kirk. Lots of Mike's family had come over from Ireland for the wedding, and it was great to see their reactions as they saw the church for the first time.

Autumn is definitely here!

Niki looked absolutely stunning...

The ceremony was conducted by a family friend and was just beautiful.

After the service, Niki & Mike headed down to the lake for photographs...

Meanwhile, the guests were treated to a display with some wonderful birds of prey.

The awesome wedding party!

We had so much fun photographing Niki and Mike...

The marquee looked fantastic, as did the 'flowerpot cupcake' wedding cake.

The speeches were all excellent, and Niki and Mike chose to break with tradition and give a joint speech. This was the first time we've seen a toast to Ryanair - they were thanked for helping make Niki & Mike's long distance relationship a little more affordable!

Van Morrison's 'Have I Told You Lately That I Love You' was a great choice for their first dance, during which Niki & Mike showed off some seriously impressive moves.

The Red Hot Poker Band were awesome, and the dancefloor was packed all night...

And the fun didn't stop there - other highlights of the evening included a beautiful Irish song, a garter throw for the boys and a very entertaining 'Mr & Mrs' game...

What a weekend!

We've got lots of blogging to catch up on after a very busy weekend, but thought we'd start with a few photos from yesterday's wedding fair at the Royal College of Physicians.

We got to meet lots of lovely couples, and it was fantastic to hear everyone's plans for their big day. It was also great to catch up with other wedding suppliers, whose work we know and love. Another highlight was the bridal fashion show by Pretty Woman.

Our stand was in a great position - next to a wonderful cake company (Too Good to Eat) and diagonally opposite fantastic tablet makers - Highland Favours. The diet starts today! ;-)

We'd like to thank the team at the Royal College of Physicians for all their hard work in making the fair such a great event.

Meet us at the Royal College of Physicians Wedding Fair this Sunday

If you're in Edinburgh this Sunday (September 27th), and are looking for wedding inspiration, you should come along to the Royal College of Physicians.

This is the first time this stunning venue has opened its doors for a wedding fair, and we were delighted to be invited to exhibit.

As well as the chance to meet some of Scotland's top wedding suppliers, there will also be a bridal fashion show at 1pm and 3pm, as well as hair & make up demonstrations throughout the afternoon. Entry is free. For more information click here

Vicki & Greig - The Atrium & Dynamic Earth - Edinburgh wedding photography

We'd been really looking forward to photographing Vicki & Greig's wedding at these two incredible, and very different, venues. And yesterday exceeded all our expectations.

Vicki looked radiant - she said she couldn't believe the big day had finally arrived...

Over at The Atrium, Greig was looking incredibly handsome. He'd had a bit of a last-minute outfit panic after discovering he had picked up the wrong jacket at a recent event. Luckily he was able to get a replacement yesterday morning, just in the nick of time!

We borrowed one of the lovely floral displays for this photo of the rings.

No wonder Greig couldn't stop smiling, how gorgeous is his bride?

This reading got everyone smiling...

It's an amazing feeling to say your vows in front of your family and closest friends...

The sun shone as we headed over to Dynamic Earth...

And we loved making the most of the location to create some striking shots of the wedding party.

Vicki & Greig were so generous with their time, and were happy to go exploring with us...

Vicki & Greig's pink and black colour cheme looked ace in the Biosphere. We loved this 'Sweet Shop' idea, as did their guests!

The cake was made by a family friend and looked incredible.

After dinner and three excellent speeches, the guests were given the opportunity to take a look around Dynamic Earth. There was lots of laughter when embarassing photos of Vicki & Greig (and their mates!) were played on the big screens.

We managed to steal Vicki & Greig away for a few more photos.

Then it was time to party! Let's Stay Together was a great choice for the first dance.

Pacific are fantastic musicians and soon had the guests showing off their moves...

Angela & Jason - Seton Collegiate Church & Marlin's Wynd - Edinburgh wedding photography

We've said it before but we'll say it again, we love it when Canadians get married here in Edinburgh! Not only does Jay get to go all out with his Canuck sayings (knowing he'll be fully understood), but we're also guaranteed a total blast!

We'd been really excited about Angela & Jason's wedding since the first time we met them - these guys put so much time and thought into personalising the day, and making sure that their guests had amazing memories to take home with them.

The day began with a little online lesson on how to tie a cravat...our iphone comes in very handy at times!

Over at the bride's pad, Angela was looking gorgeous - despite having had just an hour-and-a-half of sleep the night before!

The sun was shining as we arrived at Seton Collegiate Church.

And the effect through the stained glass was incredible.

Meanwhile, the beautiful bride had arrived at the church.

And it was time for her big entrance...

There followed one of the most beautiful, and personal, services we have had the pleasure to photograph.

It all got a little too romantic for some...

Angela surprised Jason by swapping his wedding ring to one that he'd fallen in love with but thought was totally out of their budget. She couldn't stop laughing, and he was so caught up in the emotion of the day that it took him ages to notice the swap!

Everyone was in great spirits!

The guests tucked into some very special treats made by Berry Scrumptious.

The girls were working their Vogue poses...

And Jason & his brother (and best man) Ryan looked fantastic in their kilts. "Mmmhmmmmm" ;-)

Then it was time for some beautiful couple and bridal shots.

We headed over to Calton Hill, for some iconic Edinburgh images.

Jay was lying down on the job as usual...

Then it was on to the Old Town, where we had a great time photographing Angela & Jason while their guests did a ghost tour in the Vaults!

Marlin's Wynd was a great, and very atmospheric setting for the party that followed.

We loved this cake!

Trash the Dress competition

We've had an amazing summer, packed full of beautiful weddings to photograph. And to celebrate we're offering one lucky bride a free Trash the Dress shoot.

For the trash the dress shoots we use a range of locations such as beaches, riversides, glens, farms, city centres, industrial estates, etc, etc! Sometimes our brides have a particular location in mind that they would like to use and we try to incorporate this into the shoot where possible. We also base our choice on the individual style of each bride, tailoring the locations to suit their look and their wedding dress. Husbands are also very welcome to take part in the shoot!

Just kidding, we were invited!

My cousin Peter married his incredibly beautiful bride, Klaire at Priston Mill, near Bath on Friday. It was the most amazing day and we had a fabulous time as guests (our first time since our own wedding two years ago).

Priston Mill is such a gorgeous setting for a wedding. The sun shone, the bride and groom glowed and oh how we partied!

Jay was very chuffed to get back into his kilt, and you know how I love a spot of dress shopping! ;-)

Cat & James - Biggar Kirk & Toftcombs House, Scottish wedding photography

Have we mentioned lately how much we love our job? Not only do we have the honour of photographing a couple on what is one of the most special days of their lives, but we're also part of the big bubble of happiness that their friends and family create. It's awesome!

On Saturday we had the great pleasure of photographing one of the sweetest couples in the world, Cat & James. These guys are based in South Yorkshire but, through many hours of research, managed to track down the perfect venue for their celebrations in the Scottish Borders.

Our day began at Cardrona Golf Club, where James and the boys were having a relaxing (or rather challenging, given that it was super windy!) game of golf.

I never thought you'd catch me on a golf course pre 9am on a Saturday morning but it just goes to show the things I'll do for our grooms! Jay was, of course, in his element.

Over at Toftcombs House, Cat and the girls were preparing for the big day in a far more civilised manner...

After their chilly game of golf, the boys warmed up with a little JD.

And then headed to Biggar Kirk...

Cat looked absolutely breathtaking...

The service was beautiful and a little emotional...

The very happy bride!

The church was full of great areas for photos...

Back at Toftcombs, we stole Cat & James away from the action for a little while. The house is full of great features and we had a fantastic time discovering them.

Can you tell we liked this wardrobe as a backdrop? It rocked, as did the light, as did Cat & James!

And then it was time for the speeches, which were incredibly good...

What a view!

Coldplay's Yellow was the perfect song for Cat & James' wonderful first dance.

And then their guests packed the dance floor.

A beautiful day ended with wishes for love, laughter and happy ever after being carried up into the sky (at least that's what we wished for!).

Cat & James - What an amazing day! Thank you for bringing us along for the ride, we loved every minute of it! Have a wonderful honeymoon and soak up some sun for us.

Michelle & Nick - Apex International, Edinburgh wedding photography

We love it when people go out of their way to personalise their wedding day, and this was certainly the case on Saturday.

Michelle & Nick are great fun to be around and were determined that their guests, who had travelled long distances to be with them, would have a fantastic time at their Edinburgh wedding. And did they ever!

The boys enjoyed their Abbey Road moment. We'd like to say the traffic waited patiently but one tourist just had to lean on his horn. Bet he wouldn't have if our bride had been there!

Michelle ran into the hairdressers to show them how she looked in her dress, it was really sweet. I'm making a cameo appearance in the window (where's Wally?).

Michelle used to make her granddad drive past Greyfriars' Bobby every time she visited him in Edinburgh as a child. This photo was top of their list!

We had so much fun photographing these guys...

One of our favourite cakes ever - Love hearts and Lego men, can it get any better than this?

The speeches were very funny...

And their little page boy was incredibly pleased with his Nessie gift!

And then it was time for the party to fully get underway...

Camping on Skye - Scottish landscape photography

We're just back from a quick (and very wet) camping trip on Skye. This was our first visit to this beautiful island (disgraceful we know, but at least Jay has an excuse being Canadian - I don't!). It was made all the better by the fact that we were joined by Jay's little sister, Elyse, who has been visiting us for the past week before heading home to Ontario to start university.

Glencoe is always spectacular - we can't get enough of it. In this photo Elyse & Jay are hiding the fact they are being attacked by midges from every direction rather well.

After driving through hours of rain showers we got really, really lucky. The skies were blue as we drove across the bridge and this was the view that awaited us...

Elyse and I 'researched' the local brewery while Jay did his landscape thing...

Despite waking up yesterday to grey skies and a very soggy campsite, it was a lovely end to a fantastic week.

Have a safe flight home Elyse, we miss you already!

Lee & Paul - Solsgirth House, Scottish wedding photography

After viewing our blog, a friend recently asked if we ever photograph any weddings that aren't amazing. The answer is no, we don't. We are very fortunate to work with really fantastic couples who put so much time and thought into planning their special day and who really go out of their way to help us create stunning photographs.

Last Saturday was no exception. We'd been looking forward to this day since the very first time we met Lee & Paul, a year ago. Not only are these guys great fun, but they also have an impeccable sense of style, and we knew their wedding would be absolutely beautiful.

Solsgirth House is incredibly elegant, and there are so many great areas for photographs. Here are a few of our favourites...

Lee's dress was a gorgeous style and shape - she looked stunning.

Paul opted for a twist to the conventional kilt outfit and looked fantastic.

The all important rings!

It was touch and go with the weather, but Lee & Paul got the outdoor ceremony they wanted.

The wedding party were great to photograph.

And then it was time to make use of the house's stunning features to create some beautiful bridal and couple shots.

We got so lucky with the weather. It started to rain just as the guests headed indoors where they were treated to three excellent speeches.

We popped into the chapel with Lee for a few more bridal shots.

And then it was time for the dancing to begin...

Trash the dress/Post-wedding shoots

Lennoxlove House - wonderful Scottish wedding venue

We've been incredibly busy this month with weddings, boudoir and portrait shoots - not to mention squeezing in a few Fringe shows when we can - and our poor blog is suffering from neglect as a result.

Today we were photographing Lennoxlove House in East Lothian, which, with its beautiful surroundings and rich history, is one of our favourite wedding venues.

Dating back to the 1300s, Lennoxlove is owned by the Duke and Duchess of Hamilton, whose renovation efforts have seen it restored to its former glory.

Monika & Michael - Birse Kirk & Potarch Hotel, Aberdeenshire - Scottish wedding photography

We had a fantastic day up in Royal Deeside yesterday, photographing Monika & Michael's intimate and beautiful wedding celebration. They had done a wonderful job of organising everything from their home in Amsterdam, and their attention to detail resulted in the perfect day.

Monika and her family were getting ready at a nearby steading, which has been converted into a holiday cottage and was in a gorgeous setting.

Monika looked absolutely breathtaking...

The word of the day was the mother-of-the-bride's favourite - 'whisky' - prompting much laughter during the family photos!

Post-war Citroen Traction Avants were the stylish mode of transport for the day.

Down at Birse Kirk, Michael and his best man, his brother, Alan were looking good in the Irvine tartan.

And their ushers were doing a great job...

A lovely Humanist ceremony followed.

After champagne at Potarch Hotel, we headed down to the river.

Regular followers of our blog will know that we love distressed buildings, and we really lucked out at this location - with lots of great spots for fashion-style images. And Monika & Michael were just fantastic to photograph.

Amazing doesn't even begin to describe the time we had on Saturday with Leigh & Stuart. From the minute we met these guys (and their gorgeous five month-old, Jamie), we knew we would be in for a wonderful day - after all, they had travelled over 3,000 miles from Toronto for their dream Scottish wedding.

Leigh had told us that she had some pretty special shoes lined up to wear on the big day, and she wasn't kidding - how gorgeous are these?

We then hopped into the wedding taxi and headed into town for some urban photos. Leigh & Stu used to live in Edinburgh, and had lots of favourite spots in mind for these.

When your bride writes murder mysteries for a living, you know you're going to get to shoot in some fantastic locations!

Leigh & Stu came up with the great idea of having their first dance on the Royal Mile - and received a very well-deserved round of applause (not to mention a few wolf whistles).

Leigh & Stu - Thanks for devoting so much time and energy to your wedding photography, and for trusting us 100%. It was so much fun to see Edinburgh through your eyes, and photographing your special day was an absolute honour and pleasure.

A gorgeous bride and groom who were giggling all day, lots of good-natured England/Scotland jibes, flowers as far as the eye could see, and an incredible party at Hopetoun House were the order of the day on Saturday.

Francesca & Patrick (aka Checi & Paddy) met while studying at St Andrews University and make such a lovely couple. As you'll see from the group shots later, they and the wedding party were on great form all day and had us in stitches.

The day began with the girls getting ready in the serene surroundings of Six Mary Place guesthouse.

Meanwhile, at the pub, Paddy was enjoying a drink with the boys, who had been issued with their instructions for the day...

And soon it was time to head to the church...

Where a beautiful bride arrived in a vintage Bentley...

The minister who conducted the service also christened Paddy in this church.

Then it was on to stunning Hopetoun House, where a warm welcome awaited.

The rain stopped right on cue, and we were able to get outside for some fun group shots.

Then we took a walk to Lime Avenue with Checi and Paddy - the light was just beautiful.

Soon it was time for the guests to enjoy a wonderful meal. The ballroom looked amazing - the colours were beautiful and the flowers really added to the wow factor.

The girls had been practising their dance moves!

Checi's dad had an infectious laugh and had everyone roaring during his speech! He warmed the audience up perfectly for the best man, whose speech was hilarious.

We popped outside for a few more photos before the dancing got started.

Sometimes we like the rain...

Checi & Paddy kicked off the dancing with a Gay Gordons...

Best man James (aka Prowler) showed off his moves.

When we heard that Checi's dad had planned surprise fireworks for his daughter we thought we'd add in a surprise of our own, so we came back at the end of the night to capture the action. Surprise!

Jenni & Neil - Edinburgh pre-wedding shoot

On Sunday we met up with Jenni and Neil, whose wedding we are photographing at Fettes College in November.

As these guys live down south they'd had a hectic weekend catching up with family and friends, and with wedding preparations.

They were great fun to photograph and happily went along with all of our suggestions (even the strange ones!).

Joanne & David - St Mary's, Dalkeith & The Merchants' Hall - Edinburgh wedding photography

We've been travelling all over Scotland lately and, while it has been amazing to work in so many diverse locations, we were really looking forward to shooting a wedding on home turf again.

Saturday began at Joanne's parents house in Dalkeith, where the girls were getting ready. Joanne was incredibly laid back and it was a lovely atmosphere as the clock ticked towards noon.

Meanwhile, David was on great form (or was hiding his nerves well!) as he arrived at the church with his best man and groomsmen. As the boys were nice and early we had time to make the most of the surroundings, and the beautiful church itself, before the guests started to arrive.

After spending the morning perfecting his speech in the garden (and keeping well away from the makeshift beauty salon in the living room!), Joanne's dad was blown away when he saw her dressed as a bride. He couldn't have looked prouder as he escorted her down the aisle. And she couldn't have looked more beautiful.. or more excited!

The processional music was composed by David's grandad, for David's parents' wedding in the 1970s, and was a lovely personal touch.

The service was both incredibly funny, and very touching, in equal measures.

After the service it was time for some group shots...

And then we just had to get back inside this beautiful building for a few more photographs.

Joanne & David were on cloud nice and were fantastic to photograph.

And then it was on to Edinburgh city centre, and to another incredible venue - The Merchants' Hall.

We took a walk up the street with Joanne and David, and when we asked if they'd mind using some very urban (and just a little bit random) locations for photos they said, "Of course not - that's why we booked you". Have we mentioned yet how much we love these guys?

The hall looked incredible and, given its scale, it's little wonder that the speakers felt a bit nervous. But the speeches that followed were absolutely first class.

The youngest guest, at just three weeks-old, found all the excitement a little exhausting.

Meanwhile, flower girl Lily soon overcame her initial shyness and was keen to have her moment in the spotlight.

Then it was time for Joanne and David's first dance...

After that, the party really got started...

Caroline & Dennis - Dalmenach, Ballindalloch - Scottish wedding photography

Remember these guys? Of course you do! After our awesome pre-shoot with Caroline and Dennis in February we were really looking forward to photographing their wedding in beautiful Speyside.

Our day began at the hairdressers in Grantown-on-Spey, where Caroline and her bridesmaids were being styled.

Next it was on to Caroline's uncle's house, where the final preparations for the wedding were taking place. The gardens were looking fantastic, as was the marquee, and the flowers were simply stunning.

So many pretty things!

We knew Caroline would make a stunning bride..and guess what, we were right!

Dennis was looking fantastic and was completely relaxed, even when practising his speech.

The whole ceremony was just breathtaking - from start to finish.

After a celebratory toast it was time for some group photos, with lots of laughter throughout.

Jay may have regretted asking the boys to do a rugby-style pose!

There were so many great places for photographs...

Then it was into the marquee where the guests enjoyed a delicious meal. This was followed by the speeches, which were hilarious.

We love Dennis's reaction to this photo being unearthed...

Caroline & Dennis's friends and family had travelled from all over the world to be with them on their special day, and everyone was enjoying the Highland setting.

Then it was time for Caroline & Dennis to open the dancing. And it wasn't long until they were joined on the dancefloor by an eager little flower girl!

A Whisky Kiss put on a great act as always, and had everyone in the ceilidh spirit...

As the sun set we popped outside for a few last photos.

And the guests' good wishes were carried out by lantern, into the night air.

Carolyn & Chris - Brisbane House Hotel - Scottish wedding photography

We had a fantastic time photographing Carolyn & Chris's wedding in Largs on Sunday. These guys were so much fun in front of the camera and went the extra mile to ensure that we got some very special photographs.

When we arrived at Brisbane House Hotel it was all go on the preparation front...

The excitement was building in the honeymoon suite, where Carolyn and the girls were getting ready.

Chris couldn't have looked happier, and that great smile stayed on his face all day.

Chris is originally from New Zealand and many of their guests had travelled huge distances to be with them on their special day. They were given a warm Scottish welcome.

Carolyn looked absolutely stunning as she walked down the aisle on her dad's arm. A beautiful and very personal, Humanist ceremony followed.

It was threatening to rain all afternoon so we stayed around the hotel for our first set of photographs.

And then we took a walk to the beach with Carolyn & Chris, who were happy to brave the weather.

We couldn't resist the lure of the teacup ride - which gave us all a good giggle!

The only thing that kept Carolyn & Chris from getting on the bouncy castle was that it started to rain!

Back at the hotel we headed upstairs for a few more photos.

A champagne fountain was a great way to kick off the next part of the celebrations. It was followed by some lovely speeches.

Carolyn & Chris met at a dance class and the pressure had been on for them to pull out all the stops with their first dance. They didn't disappoint!

We ended the night with a few more photos of the gorgeous, and very happy, newlyweds.

Carolyn & Chris - We can't even begin to describe how much we enjoyed working with you both - from start to finish it was such a wonderful day! We wish you all the happiness in the world & look forward to getting together for that cocktail soon!

Kirsten & Robbie - Bathgate High Church & Glenbervie House Hotel - Scottish wedding photography

We had so much fun back in December when we did a portrait shoot with Kirsten and Robbie, and Kirsten's sister Caitlin. Since then we've been really looking forward to the main event!

Our day began at Kirsten's family home in Armadale, where she and her bridesmaids were getting ready.

The logistics had been planned very carefully as the Armadale Gala Day was also taking place on Saturday, with road closures due to the parade.

As the brass band marched past the house the excitement was starting to build.

Kirsten was looking radiant!

A beautiful ceremony was held at Bathgate High Church and Kirsten & Robbie couldn't stop smiling throughout.

Then it was time to head to Larbert for the celebrations.

The sun was shining as we arrived at Glenbervie.

And the guests really enjoyed these...

The speeches were all excellent and Caitlin almost had me in tears with her touching tribute to her big sister and Robbie...I had to bite my lip and concentrate really hard on my camera settings!

After the wedding breakfast we headed outside for some photos with Kirsten and Robbie. There was lots of laughter and quite a lot of kissing too!

And then it was back inside for a few more...

The honeymoon suite was the perfect setting for some bridal shots. And by the way, how stunning is this girl?

The first dance is always one of our (many) favourite parts of the wedding day. When Kirsten and Robbie took to the floor for their first dance as husband and wife it was a really beautiful moment...

And then the party got fully underway!

Kirsten & Robbie, thanks for being so all-round-awesome and so fantastic to photograph - we loved every minute! We hope you're having a wonderful time on your travels and look forward to showing you your photos when you get back.

After the wedding...

Our good friend Kelly Thacker, who runs a life-coaching business in Edinburgh, has written a great article on her blog on post-wedding blues - that 'I have so much spare time on my hands, what the heck am I going to do with it' feeling that most newlyweds experience!

Many of our couples throw themselves into a new project after their wedding - buying and renovating a house, changing career or starting their own business. When you add up the number of hours you have spent planning your wedding you start to see why it's important to have something to fill the gap and look forward to afterwards.

We were very fortunate in that our business was still young when we got married, and we were able to put all our energy into making it a success. Having a legitimate excuse to still read Scottish Wedding Directory and Real Life Weddings - and get to check out all the gorgeous new dresses - was fantastic too!

Fern & Paul - Biggar Kirk & Cornhill House Hotel - Scottish wedding photography

We had a great day yesterday in South Lanarkshire with Fern & Paul, whose wedding was a colourful and stylish affair full of fun and laughter.

I started the day at Cornhill House, where Paul and the boys were looking fantastic in their morning suits and colourful ties with matching buttonholes.

Spot the stripy socks!

The colourful ties (and thoughts of Mr Pink et al.) got me in mind for a Reservoir Dogs-style shot!

Meanwhile, Jay was at Fern's family home, where final preparations were taking place...

And a gorgeous bride was getting ready to say 'I do'.

At the church, the ushers made sure all the guests were well looked after!

A beautiful ceremony followed...

And then it was on to Cornhill House, where the sun was shining and the celebrations kicked off.

The girls absolutely rocked the 1950s look!

After some family photos, we took a little walk with Fern & Paul, stopping for photographs along the way.

The cake looked (almost) too good to eat.

The speeches were excellent...

Fern & Paul got the party started...

And soon the dancefloor was full.

Following a challenge issued during the speeches, Paul treated everyone to a rendition of Embrace's 'Come back to what you know', and was soon joined by his back-up singers.

As the sun began to set we popped outside for a few more photos...

Kate & Matt - Aberfeldy Church & Rose Cottage - Scottish wedding photography

On Saturday we were in sunny Aberfeldy, to photograph Kate & Matt's country chic wedding.

The day began at Rose Cottage - a beautiful Victorian villa owned by Kate's parents.

Kate looked absolutely gorgeous in her 1950s-inspired dress.

Meanwhile, at the church next door, Matt was looking very handsome in his tweed suit.

After a lovely service, Kate & Matt's guests let fly with the confetti!

Then it was back to Rose Cottage, where the Pimms was flowing.

We left the guests to enjoy their cool drinks and headed down to Wade's Bridge for some photographs of Matt and Kate.

And some passing white-water rafters offered their congratulations!

Back at Rose Cottage, the marquee was looking beautiful, with so many lovely finishing touches.

The guests were delighted to discover they would be tucking into hog roast!

We're getting all our gear ready for our last wedding of May, which takes place tomorrow in Aberfeldy.

We've had a really busy month and it's been great to work in so many fantastic locations and with such wonderful people. We've been on a farm in Northumberland, in a marquee in the heart of the Trossachs, in a famous house in Glasgow, at a historic house in East Lothian, in an old cowshed near St Andrews and on a golf course overlooking the fantastic Firth of Forth!

Fiona & Colin - Cockburnspath Parish Church & Macdonald Marine Hotel, North Berwick - Scottish wedding photography

Yesterday we were in beautiful Berwickshire, to capture Fiona & Colin's wedding celebrations.

The day began at Fiona's family home, where bridesmaid Eilidh (who also happens to be a make-up artist) was putting the finishing touches to the girls' make-up.

Fiona was helped into her dress by her mum and, as you can see, she looked absolutely beautiful. It was great to see the reactions from her dad and bridesmaids as they saw her.

Her veil has a fantastic history - originally worn by her great-great-great-great grandmother, it's 160 years-old and has been worn by all the brides in the family through the generations.

We left the girls to enjoy a glass of champagne, and headed over to Cockburnspath Parish Church. Said to date back to the 1500s, it has an unusual circular tower.

Fiona was accompanied down the aisle by her dad, Reg. Colin said later he felt pretty choked up when he saw his stunning bride for the first time.

A lovely service was conducted by family friend, Anne Lithgow who came out of retirement specially for the occasion.

After some photographs at the church we headed over to North Berwick, where a warm welcome awaited at the Marine Hotel.

During the family photos, baby Robert stole the show with his tartan trews and Nessie slippers!

The hotel is situated in an incredibly scenic area and Fiona & Colin were more than happy to get outside for some photos on the golf course!

The speeches were all very funny and a special mention must go to best man, Grant for his fantastic slideshow.

Fiona & Colin opened the dancing to Jamiroquai and soon had lots of company on the dancefloor. And then it was on with the ceilidh!

As the sun set we popped outside for a few more photos...and what a sunset it was - just breathtaking!

The wedding singer

We'd like to wish every success to one of our 2007 brides, Pamela Kavanagh, who is now offering her services as a wedding singer.

Pamela has an amazing voice and blew her guests away when she got up on stage and sang at her own wedding reception at Marlin's Wynd in Edinburgh.

Having a professional singer perform during the wedding ceremony is such a beautiful touch and one that always goes down well with the guests - particularly if it keeps them entertained while you are signing the register in a back room at the church!

Lee & Paul's pre-wedding shoot, Edinburgh

After a month of very mixed weather, we were delighted to wake up to blue skies on Sunday morning.

We met up with Lee & Paul at the Botanic Gardens and took a walk through our favourite areas, stopping for photos along the way. We are photographing their wedding at Solsgirth House (a beautiful venue) this August and this was the perfect chance for them to get used to the cameras.

It was also a good chance for me to find out all about Lee's dress, while Jay and Paul were engrossed in a conversation on golf and guitars!

We made a new friend!

Michaela & Colin, Kinkell Byre, St Andrews - Scottish wedding photography

We had a fantastic time yesterday photographing Michaela and Colin's wedding at Kinkell Byre, near St Andrews.

We were really excited about working at this venue, which has been converted from byres and stables at Kinkell Farm. It's completely unique and the surroundings, with views over St Andrews Bay and the Firth of Tay, are just beautiful.

I began the day with the boys, who were on great form.

Meanwhile, Jay was with the girls, who were having fun preparing for the day ahead.

Event company Carnival Chaos had done a fantastic job dressing the venue. And Colin's mum, auntie and helpers had created gorgeous displays, buttonholes and bouquets on a 'country cottage' theme, with many people contributing flowers from their gardens.

Friends and family travelled from all over the world to join Michaela and Colin on their special day.

It was just a short walk to the byre for the bride and her bridesmaids (one of whom was on specially-decorated crutches!).

Michaela's dress was stunning and she looked incredibly beautiful. She was accompanied down the aisle by dad, Michael, while Rusalka String Quartet played Air from Handel's Water Music.

Michaela & Colin were married in a Humanist ceremony conducted by family friend, John Bishop. The service was very personal and was both touching and humorous in equal measures!

After congratulations and champagne, we gathered the troops for some group shots.

We then took advantage of a bright (and dry!) spell to head outside.

A wonderful Italian meal, and some great speeches, followed and then it was time for the dancing to get underway. Michaela & Colin took to the floor to Damien Rice's 'The Blower's Daughter' - a really beautiful song.

Then it was time for a ceilidh, with Absent Friends ensuring that the dancefloor was kept busy.

As we were leaving, the rain let up for a dramatic view.

The first time we photographed Jess was last June, when she rocked her wedding dress on Brighton Beach in what turned out to be an awesome Trash the Dress shoot.

We were really excited then to hear that not only was Jess pregnant, but that she was keen to make the trip up to Edinburgh from Tunbridge Wells to work with us again.

We had a great shoot on Friday with Jess and her husband Billy, and, as always, there was lots of laughter throughout.

This morning I met up with Kelly for a portrait shoot on Portobello beach.

Kelly and I have known each other since we were 16 and went through college and uni together. We are now both onto our second career - Kelly runs the hugely successful life coaching business, Lust For Life Coaching.

She is such a positive person to be around and always puts a smile on my face. I am very lucky to count her as one of my best friends!

We had a wonderful time on Saturday at Lennoxlove House with Charlotte & Tony.

We first photographed these guys back in March, when they brought their gorgeous baby boy Anthony along to The Shore for a pre-shoot. Charlotte and Tony make a fantastic couple and both have a great sense of humour - we knew we were in for a fun day!

While the boys began the day with a game of golf (Scotland versus England so therefore very important!), the girls enjoyed the chance to have their hair and make-up done in such beautiful surroundings.

Little Anthony was very taken by his friend, Olivia's sunglasses.

Charlotte was looking radiant and it was great to see her excitement build as the clock ticked closer to 3pm!

Tony was on great form after triumphing on the golf course, and all the boys looked fantastic in their kilts.

Charlotte looked absolutely stunning!

The service was beautiful and Charlotte & Tony managed to inject their sense of humour into it too.

After a champagne toast, Charlotte and Tony took a little time out for some photographs.

The sun came out just in time for a big group shot in the gardens.

Then it was into the marquee, where a fantastic meal, followed by some great speeches, awaited.

What a beautiful setting...

After the cake cutting, Charlotte and Tony opened the dancing and showed off their famous moves!

Tony Snr entertained the crowd with a fantastic performance.

Tony was quick to follow in his dad's footsteps and get up on stage for a rendition of Sweet Caroline.

The party was in full swing as we packed up our camera bags, leaving everyone to what was sure to be a very memorable night.

Johanna & Andrew - St Leo's & House for an Art Lover, Glasgow - Scottish wedding photography

On Friday we were in Glasgow to photograph the wedding of Johanna and Andrew, who were so much fun to work with and had us in stitches all day.

The day began at Johanna's mum's house in Pollockshields, where the girls were getting ready.

While Jay stayed with the girls, I headed across to St Leo's to meet Andrew and the boys.

Johanna arrived at the church in a vintage Rolls Royce.

After the service we headed to House for an Art Lover. This unique venue is full of great opportunities for photos.

Johanna looked absolutely beautiful in her strapless gown and cathedral-length veil.

And Andrew was looking pretty good too!

We always try to keep our groups shots relaxed and fun - and these guys were happy to oblige!

Flower-girl Julia took a well-earned break from her duties!

We then took advantage of a sunny spell to head outside with Johanna and Andrew for some photographs. There was lots of joking around and Andrew was particularly keen to show us his best top model poses.

After a fantastic meal the guests were treated to some excellent, and of course, very funny speeches.

Then it was time to head downstairs where Johanna and Andrew took their first dance as husband and wife.

We finished a fantastic day with a photograph as the sun set.

Zoe & Wullie, Fintry Kirk & Monachyle Mhor - Scottish wedding photography

We had a fantastic day yesterday with Zoe and Wullie, and their friends and family. And while the weather was typically Scottish, the day was beautiful in absolutely every other way.

Our day began in Fintry in Stirlingshire, where Zoe and her bridesmaids were getting ready at her family home. It was at this point that we began to appreciate just how much work Zoe had put into the wedding day - she designed and made the invites, order of service and menu herself, along with many other additional finishing touches.

While the girls were having their hair and make-up done (and enjoying some well-earned pink champagne!), Wullie and his best men and ushers were preparing the bridal car. Then it was time for Wullie to hop onto the back of a motorbike and head to the church.

Zoe looked absolutely stunning!

Zoe and Wullie couldn't stop smiling in the church. It was a beautiful service, and many of the guests commented on just how special, and unique, it was.

After some photographs at the church we headed towards Monachyle Mhor, stopping a couple of times at scenic spots on the way. Zoe was determined that the wind and rain would not stop us from getting photographs in the beautiful surroundings.

A warm welcome awaited at Monachyle Mhor, where the marquee was looking gorgeous. Zoe studied interior design at art college and this showed through the entire day - from the baby cherry tree favours to the cherry and apple blossom table flowers. Just beautiful!

Some fantastic speeches were rounded off with a comic poem by the bride's mum, and then it was time for the night's celebrations to get fully underway.

After dinner we popped over to Zoe & Wullie's room for a few more photographs - it was perfect for a photo shoot.

Zoe & Wullie's first dance was to Jack Johnson. Skerryvore then ensured that the dancefloor was kept packed all night and everyone was having a fantastic time.

The rain finally stopped as the sun began to set and we were able to pop outside with Zoe & Wullie for a few more photographs.

Zoe & Wullie, thanks for an amazing day and for being so willing to brave the extreme weather. We hope you have a fantastic honeymoon and wish you a lifetime full of happiness.

Congratulations Craig!

We'd like to say a huge congratulations to Craig Cunningham, who came in 1st place at Maggie's Monster Bike and Hike at the weekend.

The 24-hour fundraising team challenge goes from Fort William through to Inverness, covering 73 miles along the Great Glen Way.

During the gruelling event Craig biked 30 miles and then ran 43 miles - finishing with a time of 9hrs 30mins. It's a huge achievement and Craig has put in a great deal of training to get to this stage - even going hill running on the morning of his wedding in November, in the snow!

Funds raised from the event go to Maggie’s which provides support to anyone affected by any type of cancer, be they a patient, family member or friend.

Craig is now preparing to take part in the Caledonian Challenge, which takes place from June 13th-14th and covers 54 miles in 24 hours.

Claire & Sandy - St James' Church and Charlton House, Northumberland

It was an early start for us yesterday as we were travelling down to Northumberland to photograph Claire & Sandy's wedding. We had a great time during our pre-shoot with these guys in Edinburgh in February, and were really looking forward to the main event!

The day began at a cottage in the country, where Sandy's best man was encouraging him to hurry up and get dressed! Once in his military uniform, Sandy was able to take a little time out for some photos before we headed across to South Charlton to see the girls.

It was a little more serene at Claire's family home, where she and her bridesmaids were getting ready.

While Jay stayed with the girls, I headed down to the church to meet Sandy and his ushers. Family and friends were beginning to arrive and everyone was enjoying the lovely weather.

Claire looked absolutely stunning in her Ian Stuart gown. Her dad, Tim accompanied her and she walked down the aisle to Pachelbel's Canon, played beautifully on the violin.

After a lovely service, made even more memorable by performances from several of the couple's musical friends, Claire & Sandy made their way through a guard of honour formed by friends in the military.

After some photographs at the church we headed up to the farm, where the champagne was flowing and everyone was enjoying the celebrations.

Soon it was time to head into the marquee, where some hilarious speeches had the guests (and us) in hysterics. During his speech, Sandy mentioned how much it meant to him and Claire that so many of their family and friends were present, particularly as several have recently been serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The cake was amazing!

After a wonderful meal, Claire & Sandy opened the dancing to Peter Cetera's Glory of Love. They had some fantastic moves and even a lift - who doesn't love a lift!

The dancefloor was packed as the guests threw themselves enthusiatically into the ceilidh numbers. It was then time for the entertainment to begin in earnest. Stardust Express warmed their audience up with songs from the 40s to today, and soon everyone was keen to join in the dancing (and even the singing now and again!). They put on a fantastic show - we've never seen anything quite like it!

A hog roast had been laid on for the guests and a group gathered outside to light wish lanterns. As there was quite a breeze this proved a little tricky, but soon their efforts were rewarded as the lanterns took to the sky.

The final lantern of the night was lit by Claire and Sandy and it was wonderful to see it gain height and soar across the fields where Claire grew up, and off into the night sky.

Claire & Sandy, thank you for inviting us to be part of such a special, beautiful and memorable day. You and your friends and family made us feel incredibly welcome and we enjoyed every minute of it. We hope you have a fantastic honeymoon and we're really looking forward to showing you the rest of your photographs when you get back.

The magic of Istanbul

We recently spent three nights in Istanbul which - with its amazing architecture, incredibly friendly people and apple tea - has won a place in our hearts as one of our favourite cities in the world.

The cliche of East meeting West really is true in Istanbul, with the city straddling two continents. The last time I was there was in my previous life as a journalist during which I only had time to view a brief glimpse of the city's charm. I knew Jay would love it just as much as I did and getting to meet up with my brother Adam and his girlfriend Elena (who live in Madrid) was an added bonus.

We arrived late at night, in the pouring rain, and took the tube and tram from the airport to the historic part of the city where - somewhere! - our apartment awaited. Unfortunately many of the streets don't have signs and the best word to describe our, increasingly soggy, map was 'interesting'.

After the warmest welcome we've ever encountered we dried off and headed straight to a restaurant for some kebabs and beer - delicious.

The next day we were all set to hit the city's sights. We were then somewhat surprised to find a police blockade, complete with tanks, at the end of our street. It transpired that Barack Obama had also decided to visit the mosques that morning, which meant that we were forced to hit the markets instead (oh well!).

It seems we weren't the only ones who were not happy about Barack Obama's visit!

I love to rummage through markets when abroad, and these were my best yet.

Istanbul has a population of 13 million, and yet everyone was so friendly and helpful. It was wonderful to be in such a foreign place and to feel so at home.

Now in its 6th year, the 24-hour fundraising team challenge goes from Fort William through to Inverness, covering 73 miles along the Great Glen Way.

Teams will bike 30 miles and can then choose to hike 8 miles to the Bronze finish, 22 miles to the Silver finish or go the whole way and walk 43 miles to the Gold finish.

Craig is going the full distance and not only that, but he will be running rather than walking. He has been practising in all weather and even went hill running on the morning of his wedding in November - in the snow.

While I spent the last week holding the fort here and wading through a large pile of bookwork, Jay has been having a great time catching up with friends and family back in Ontario.

As this was a social trip he travelled very light (only taking three cameras, three flashes, a tripod, a softbox...the list goes on!).

Of course he couldn't resist doing a few photo shoots along the way, especially when he met our new niece Veya for the first time. We think you will agree that she is absolutely gorgeous (just like her mummy and daddy!) and that at just six weeks-old she is already quite the poser!

Carol-Ann - Trash The Dress/Post-Wedding Shoot - Highland Perthshire, Scotland

Today we were in a beautiful and very remote Highland glen for a Trash the Dress shoot with one of our 2008 brides. Carol-Ann married Craig at Fortingall Hotel on a snowy day last November, and has been keen to get her dress back on ever since. When she asked if we were up for an adventure we were more than happy to oblige!

Seeing the looks on the faces of passers-by was priceless as Carol-Ann drove through the glen in her Landrover, dressed fully in her bridal attire, complete with tiara!

The weather was pretty kind to us - a strong breeze gave beautiful movement to Carol-Ann's gorgeous Amanda Wakeley gown, and the sun came out too. Despite this it was pretty chilly, but Carol-Ann was amazing - ignoring her goosebumps and committing completely to the shoot.

We always say how lucky we are in Scotland to have such amazing scenery on our doorsteps, and today was a great example of this.

As usual Jay was determined to get his feet wet, but oddly enough didn't venture back into the water after discovering just how cold it was!

No shoot would be complete without Jay finding something to climb!

Amy & Chris, The Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh - Scottish wedding photography

Today we were at the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh to photograph the wedding of Amy and Chris. We last met up with these guys back in February for their pre-shoot, during which they were game for anything, and knew we were in for a great day.

Jay started the day at Amy's parents house where she, her bridesmaids (and adorable flower girl), and friends were getting ready. Amy & Chris's springer spaniel was also entering into the spirit of things!

Meanwhile, I headed to the Royal College of Physicians to catch Chris and the boys arriving in style - in a VW campervan.

As she arrived at the College, Amy looked stunning in her strapless, crystal-detailed gown and with her cathedral-length veil. After being piped in, she was accompanied down the aisle by her dad, to the sound of 'Kissing You' from the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack being played on the harp. Absolutely beautiful!

After a very personal, lovely service, it was time for some group photographs. As it was raining outside we used the foyer of the college for these, and then we went exploring with Amy and Chris. The Royal College of Physicians is such a beautiful building, we really were spoilt for choice when it came to photo opportunities.

After creating some beautiful shots of Amy and Chris we let them get back to the party and their guests. And then soon it was time for dinner and some excellent speeches.

The grand hall looked beautiful and Amy and Chris's Galapagos Islands theme (complete with soundtrack and animals on the tables) set the perfect atmosphere for a night of celebration.

It's been a great few months, with lots of atmospheric, winter weddings and the opportunity for Jay to finally try snowboarding in Scotland (he was naturally very impressed)!

But much as we love winter, we're really excited about spring and summer. We've got some fantastic weddings coming up, in great venues and with lovely people. It's going to be an amazing time.

I've pulled an old favourite from our archives today to set the scene for summer. Brighton-based photographer Rosie married Dan on Camusdarach Beach, near Arisaig in June 2007. It was a beautiful day and this shot of Rosie and her son, Sammy is one of my all time favourites...

Scottish MPA Awards

We were celebrating last night after one of Jay's wedding photographs won a a Certificate of Merit at the Scottish Master Photographers Association's annual awards night.

The awards ceremony was held in North Queensferry and was attended by many of Scotland's top photographers.

The day-long event included seminars by two of the UK's leading social photographers, Bella West FMPA and Simon John FMPA. It was really interesting to hear how they developed their very distinctive photography styles.

Jay was awarded a Certificate of Merit in recognition of "outstanding achievement for originality and technical excellence" in the Contemporary Wedding category. The image was taken at a wedding at Fingask Castle last August.

As always it was a great social event and it was fantastic to catch up with old friends. We'd like to thank the organisers for all their hard work and congratulate all the award winners on their well-deserved success.

The Master Photographers Association is the UK's only trade body exclusively for full-time professional wedding, portrait and commercial photographers. The association has 1,800 fully qualified members throughout the UK.

Victoria & Robert - St Mary's R.C. Cathedral & The Balmoral, Edinburgh - Scottish wedding photography

What a wonderful day we had on Saturday! We photographed the wedding of Victoria and Robert - a fantastic couple with great friends and family, who all welcomed us into their celebrations for the day.

Victoria and Robert met at high school and are currently based in Boston. After spending a day in their company we can understand exactly why their friends and family speak so highly of them.

The morning began at The Balmoral, where Victoria and her bridesmaids were getting ready in the hotel's gorgeous suites. The girls had their tunes on and the champagne (and gin!) all helped add to the great atmosphere.

After taking a peek at Victoria's dress (stunning!), I left Jay with the girls and headed over to The Scotsman where Robert and the boys were congregating and enjoying a toast of their own. Apart from one or two small mishaps (codeword - white socks...) all was well!

The sun was shining as we arrived at St Mary's R.C. Cathedral, although it was still bitterly cold. The four bridesmaids looked gorgeous in their brightly-coloured dresses and their contrasting bouquets were lovely.

Victoria looked absolutely beautiful in her jewelled, strapless gown. Her cathedral length veil and tiara were the perfect finishing touches.

After a lovely service and some photographs in the cathedral we headed up to the Old Town. Victoria and Robert had opted to brave the cold weather (there was a short snow flurry along the way!) to get some outdoor shots, and it was well worth it. They were fantastic to work with, committing completely to the shoot, and the four of us had a great time.

Then it was on to a warm welcome at The Balmoral, where Victoria and Robert's family and friends were waiting to welcome them. As always the team at The Balmoral did an amazing job, and the Holyrood Suite looked amazing. It was also great to work once more with toastmaster Morris Manson, who ensured that everything ran smoothly and that everyone was well looked after.

After some great speeches and the wedding breakfast, we borrowed the happy couple and explored the hotel for a few more photographs. We happened to pass a baby grand piano and, after a bit of gentle encouragement, Victoria sat down and began to play. We were all a bit speechless at this point (she plays incredibly well!) and Robert looked so proud - it was another highlight of an amazing day!

Then it was time for the party to begin in earnest, with Victoria and Robert opening the dancing with Nat King Cole's Let There Be Love.

It was the perfect ending to a beautiful day.

First dance - Wedding photography Scotland

The theme for our final instalment of favourite images from 2008 is the first dance. This is such a wonderful part of the wedding day and is (again!) one of our favourite moments to photograph (we know, we have a lot of favourites!).

Aside from ceilidh dancing, Jay does his best to avoid the dancefloor at all times. On our wedding day, rather than do an awkward shuffle, we decided to book some lessons with Felicity Drever of Learn 2 Wedding Dance and make the first dance another highlight of the day.

We picked Frank Sinatra's 'I've got you under my skin' - an absolute classic that we both love. Neither of us knew quite what to expect when we went for our very first lesson, but Felicity was so warm and funny, and immediately put us at ease.

We spent the whole of the first lesson giggling and stepping on each others' toes, but after a few more sessions we were swirling and twirling and even dipping!

We kept our dance lessons a secret and it went down a storm with our family and friends. It's great to think that no matter where we are in the world, whenever 'I've Got You Under My Skin' plays we will always remember that first dance feeling (not to mention look like we know what we're doing!).

For anyone considering first dance lessons, we would highly recommend it!

The reception is one of our favourite parts of the wedding day - we particularly love the speeches and the dancing. This is when people really let their hair down, and we love being there to capture it!

We've been so busy these last few weeks (so much for the quiet season!) that we have fallen behind with publishing our favourite 2008 wedding photos!

We love the little finishing touches that make each wedding personal and unique. So without further ado, here are our favourite detail shots from 2008.

Charlotte & Tony's pre-wedding shoot, Edinburgh

Yesterday we were at The Shore with Charlotte & Tony, who are getting married this May. Charlotte & Tony brought along their 13 month-old son, Anthony - who was very sleepy but was soon full of smiles (thanks to the efforts of his gran who put on an entertaining show behind us!). Anthony is a lovely wee boy and we look forward to seeing him in his wedding attire!

We took a walk with Charlotte & Tony, who were laughing and joking the whole way. Tony has been teasing Charlotte about his secret life as a model - and given how comfortable he was in front of the camera we're tempted to believe him.

We're really excited about photographing Charlotte & Tony's wedding at Lennoxlove House. Not only is the venue stunning but we know that these two will have us smiling the whole day.

Bluebell & CHAS fundraiser

We would like to wish Tracylee Armit all the best for her charity fundraiser tonight. Tracylee is a paramedic based at Dalkeith Ambulance Station and is holding the event in aid of two very worthy causes - CHAS (Children's Hospice Association Scotland) and The Bluebell Campaign.

We were delighted to be asked to support the event and have donated a gift voucher for a family portrait shoot. We look forward to photographing the winning family in the near future!

Jay loves to take landscape photographs. And I love to take photos of Jay as he takes landscape photographs. I also love to eat Snickers bars and drink cups of flask tea on these outings.

Around 99.37% of my photographs feature people, but on this recent day out I was very excited to be trying out my new camera (which is an old film camera that Jay tracked down for me for Christmas) and couldn't resist catching a couple of scenic shots of my own.

Lindsay - Edinburgh boudoir photography

Engagement/pre-wedding shoots

Regular readers of our blog will notice that we're being kept busy with pre-wedding shoots at the moment. With the wedding season about to kick off again in earnest very soon, this is a great time for us to focus on these shoots.

Engagement shoots are very popular in North America. Remember that episode of Sex and the City when Charlotte & Harry had a photo shoot in Central Park for their Sunday Times announcement? While not everyone makes it into the New York Times, engagements do tend to be announced with a photograph in the local newspaper.

Here in the UK, the engagement/pre-wedding shoot is growing in popularity. Couples are increasingly using these photographs for their save-the-date cards and wedding invites. Signature boards are also becoming very popular - an image from the pre-shoot is enlarged with a border for the guests to sign at the reception. This highly personal alternative to the guestbook looks fantastic.

Our favourite part of the pre-shoot is the wonderful bond that it creates between our couples and us. It's a great way to get to know people better and to find out the best way to photograph them. We usually spend our pre-shoots clambering around urban locations, lying on the ground when the need arises, and always laughing a lot!

Most importantly, the shoot gives the couple the opportunity to get used to being in front of the camera. By the time the wedding day comes they then know exactly what to expect (and we don't get too many raised eyebrows when we drag them off to a random location for photographs!).

Our post-wedding shoots (also sometimes known as Trash the Dress shoots) will be starting up again this month. We have a really exciting location to work in for our first TTD shoot of 2009 so watch this space!

Amy & Chris - Pre-wedding shoot

With just over a month left until their big day at Edinburgh's Royal College of Physicians, Amy and Chris are being kept busy with final preparations. When we met up for a pre-shoot it was the perfect opportunity for them to have fun in front of the camera (and to forget about the to-do list for a while!).

We took a walk through Edinburgh's Cowgate, finding lots of good locations along the way. Then Amy had the great idea of heading up to the legal graffiti wall near Potterrow. From here it was inevitable that we would end up in Bristo Square, where a friendly skateboarder was only too happy to help us out with some of the shots.

Amy & Chris, thanks for totally entering into the spirit of the shoot. We can't wait to photograph your wedding and hope you enjoy your hen and stag dos next weekend!

Zoe & Wullie - Pre-wedding shoot

On Friday we met up with Zoe & Wullie, who are getting married at Fintry Kirk this May. Their reception is to be held at the Monachyle Mhor Hotel, which is based near Balquhidder, in the heart of the stunning Trossachs.

For Zoe & Wullie's pre-shoot we wanted to use a very different location - somewhere urban, somewhere gritty...it had to be Leith.

Unfortunately Leith didn't quite live up to it's 'sunny' reputation, but despite the ominous clouds and gusty wind, Zoe and Wullie were on great form and were completely up for using all the (slightly odd) locations we found along the way.

Zoe's family has a background in the hospitality industry and we just know that this wedding is going to be absolutely gorgeous and fantastic fun. We can't wait!
